If I had a million dollars

Hello everyone. My name is Lauren Scharp, and today I am going to tell you about the idea I have to spend a million dollars.  This idea will be beneficial to those wanting to go into the eye care profession. So in order to provide more opportunity to students pursuing a doctorate degree in Optometry, I want to build an optometry school in Northern Wisconsin with my million dollars.
The optometry field is a very competitive area of education. One reason for this is because there are only 17 optometry schools throughout the United States. Let’s take a look at some numbers of acceptance rates to demonstrate this competition. At the Illinois College of Optometry, there were 1254 applicants, with only 161 accepted in 2010. At the SUNY College of Optometry in New York, there were 601 applicants, with 152 accepted. For a more broad view, 1 of 3 applicants were accepted in 2007. It is said that the demand for optometrists is expected to grow due to the limited amount of optometry schools, and students with an optometry degree. This is why I want to add another optometry school to the United States.
Of the 17 schools in the US only one of the cities has a population under 12,000. These large cities can be a very difficult adaptation to some people; including myself. I currently am working my way to optometry, but am terrified to live in a large city. The optometry school I want to go to is in Chicago. When traveling here, I enjoy being a tourist, but I’m not sure how I would do living there. It is about 6.5 hours away from my hometown, and as of right now, I am definitely a family girl. This distance will make it difficult for me to go home or for people to visit me. As for some people, they just aren’t comfortable with large cities. This leads me into where I choose to build my school.
I would like to build it in Ashland Wisconsin. Ashland is located in Northern Wisconsin right on Lake Superior. The population here is 8,032. I believe this is the perfect amount of people. I have been to Ashland many times, and it’s a smaller town, but it has a lot to offer. This includes many recreational activities, bowling alleys, movie theatres, and a wide variety of restaurants. Another reason why Ashland would be a prime spot is because it is centrally located in Northern Wisconsin. This opens up easy access for those in Minnesota and even those in the U.P. Ashland is 441 miles from the nearest other optometry school. I wanted to put a distance between schools so they all aren’t in one area. The final reason the school will be located in Ashland is because out of state tuition is ridiculously high! I want to be able to offer the people of Wisconsin and Minnesota an optometry school that they won’t have to pay out of state tuition, so they aren’t in debt for the rest of their lives.
The school will also offer a fully working eye clinic. This clinic will have a low charging rate; thus being affordable for everybody. If someone is struggling financially, the clinic will work it out so they can get an eye exam and glasses if needed. It is very important for everybody to get an annual eye exam, and this clinic will make sure this happens! The students at the school will be the ones doing the exams. There will also be Doctors of Optometry there working with and helping the students. Even though it is students working with the people, the patients will still receive excellent care. This is a great experience, and it allows the students to have firsthand look at some situations they will see after graduation.
Adding an optometry school in Wisconsin will not only be beneficial for students pursuing an optometry degree, but also for the community. I am going to leave the stage with a little bit of humor. How many optometrists does it take to change a light bulb? One or two…one or two. Thank you!

My Comfortability

I am currently in college and am taking a Human Communications class. On the first day of class, the professor asked the class to write down a number from the scale of 1-100 based on how comfortable we are with public speaking. The number I choose was 22. Public speaking makes me very uncomfortable, and I do not like speaking infront of unfamiliar people.  In high school, even with the people I was around everyday, speeches were not my favorite. I would get very nervous, my face would turn red, and I would stumble over what I wanted to say. After being in this class for just over a semester, I feel that my nervousness is getting better. I still get nervous before my speeches, but I just always tell myself "just get it over with", and "no one will judge." I would now rate myself at 40 :) I hope by the end of the class I can at least rate myself at 60!

A day in the perfect life

My perfect day would begin at 10:00 am, well rested, and the sun would be shining :)

  • then I would shower and get ready for my day. I would want about 1.5 hours to get ready.
  • after getting ready, i would go to 3 classes and be done by 3pm
  • when class is done, i would come home to my boy friend
  • we would do any homework for about one hour
  • while im doing homework he would make dinner :)

  • after dinner we would just relax for the rest of the night/watch movies and eat ice cream!
  • i would then go to bed around midnight and have pleasant dreams
